Amitabh Bachan is no more an actor when it comes to Bollywood-Shamitabh proves that he has become a brand. Director R.Balki plays with that brand and comes up with his latest project where the extremely talented Dhanush is teamed up with the great Amitabh Bachan and the result is electrifying. In order to know Shamitabh, you must first know Amitabh Bachan the man behind the actor. The man who had to face humiliation at the hands of people at All India Radio, who was ridiculed by the then superstar Rajesh Khana and the man with whom many refused to work because he was too tall. In Shamitabh, the writer/director plays with the story of that Amitabh aka Amitabh Sinha who helps Daanish portrayed by Dhanusha a cinema loving mute bus conductor becomes a superstar. How? For what you will have to watch the movie but let me tell you, the plot is very interesting in the first half. It is the second half in which things go slow; although debutant actress Akshara Haasan impressed with her acting skills but the film loses the plot and by the time the credits arrive the viewers are way too bored. Had the flick been 20 minutes shorter it would have been a perfect homage to the great voice of Big B, the voice that has mesmerized generations. The dialogues at the start of the movie are any Bachan fans delight and there was no one in the cinema who didn’t smile on the dialogue’ Tum mujhe wahan dhoond rahay ho aur main tumhara kab se yahan intezar kar raha hoon; on the whole Shamitabh is an all out entertainer where the characters have been written with the actors in mind; the actors have done well but the plot thins out at the end which shouldn’t have happened. Big B deserved a better tribute… Big B doesn’t fail.

Still Alice is to make you cry. And it succeeds, even if the methods applied by directors are obvious. Alice is played by Julianne Moore, a renowned linguistics professor afflicted with a very rare form of Alzheimer’s that is genetically passed.

Alice is barely 50 and already the symptoms are impossible to ignore. She gets lost on a jog around university where she works: she introduces and reintroduces herself to people in short order: and words, which have been Alice’s life are becoming increasingly elusive.

This is all horrifying to watch, and the inevitability of Alice’s fate doesn’t soften the blow. But for all the bleakness in Still Alice, the movie never loses its lustre. Alice is essentially the heroine of a Nancy Meyers movie. Her anguish far exceeds the midlife heartache of the protagonists. But there’ still something so tidy about Alice’s existence her perfect kitchen, healthful home cooked meals, three loving kids, happy marriage and a dazzling career.

Alice is married to John, a doctor, played by Alec Baldwin and the pair has two daughters and a son, all of whom are doing fairly well in the scheme of things.

Something Alice’s situation feels false, but the actress is ferociously authentic. And the directors are smart to keep a tight focus on Moore.

When Alice first visits a neurologist, one gets to know Alice during these scenes. She’s intelligent and polite, even as she clearly thinks the doctor’s queries are inane. When the reality of her situation begins to set in, Alice’s fear and anxiety turn at times, to hysteria. In other hands, these moments could veer into melodrama, but Moore earns the audience’s empathy. Her glossy circumstance disappears into the background and all that can be seen is an ailing woman, overwhelmed by her fate.

Fashion Extravaganza

Trade Development Authority of Pakistan has been working with the cottage industry of fashion to muster exports since the last few years. In its latest endeavor, TDAP hosted a two-day fashion extravaganza as part of the9th Expo Pakistan to target the 1500 plus foreign customers and buyers exporters.

The fashion designer Zaheer Abbas kick-started day one with his Ode to Thar collection bring the craft of the Thari women on the catwalk. He collaborated with Sindh’s Women Development Minister Rubina Qaimkhani to bring the indigenous handicraft of the Thari women on the ramp. Sahar Atif also showcased her Sultanat collection, with white on white gold-on gold tones in off-shouldre cocktail dresses. Meanwhile Mohsin Ali from the house of Sana Safinaz brought an urban touch to the runway. Gulabo showcased colorful tops inspired by the done and dusted Palestinian keffiyeh prints while Deepak Perwani exhibited clean lines in a sleek urban collection.

The first day also showcased collection by Akif Mahmood, Nickie-Naina, Karma Pink, Sublime by Sara Shahid, Adnan Pardesi and Ali Xeeshan. The second day saw the likes of Humza adnan, Nauman Afr een, Nida Azwer and handful of TDAP mix designers showcase their collection, in what was a much-need refreshing fashion weekend.

Based on the 2012 book WILD: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail, Cheryl Strayed (Witherspoon) heads out on a grueling 1,100-mile hike from the Mexico border to Canadian border to get to grips with life-altering incidents such as her divorce and the tragic loss of her mother (Derm). With each determined step, Cheryl Inches closer towards self-realization. Wild benefits from a simple, strong and straight-ahead storyline: its multi-liner narrative offers us various perspectives, such as glimpses into various stages of Cheryl’s life prior to the present day, via flashbacks. These windows into her past about what could have and what should have been still torment her. The memories are amplified due to her solitude, even as she staggers and slongs along the harsh, sun- baked, rocky road of reality.

Even her impossibly bulky bulging backpack, under whose weight she frequently buckles and stumbles, is a metaphor for the cross she willingly bears. Not surprisingly and perhaps mercifully her load gets lightened along the way, up to a point where after facing the truth rather than running away from it, her conscience transcends guilt, fear and regrets of the past. The opening scene shows her taking a breather on a craggy hilltop. Her feet are lacerated and swollen and her face, a picture of exhaustion-bordering on despair. But the flame of determination still burns bright with the will to soldier on. Cheryl’s ex-husband (Sadoski) whom she’s still friends with, encourages her along the way with thoughtfully-written letters and care packages sent to rest-stops in advance. Along the way, Cheryl meets various people ranging from helpful, a farmer family who notice that she’s starving and give her dinner, to creepy hunters and to amiable (fellow hikers to share laughs and swap stories) while the ending seems a bit hurried and underwhelming, it is Witherspoon who shines throughout. She is extremely convincing in this stripped-down role whose character she appears to have completely and convincingly absorbed.
